Common Problems READ HERE FIRST!!! (Updated 15/09/2009)

The methods and tools in this text are intended to fix problems and get the games running properly.
Note that most of the fixes on this page are files you need to put in your game folder. The default TFD installation folder is:
"C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\"

If it's not there, simply right-click on the TFD launcher link on your desktop, go to Properties and see which directory it launches from. That should be the subfolder "Launcher"
of the main TFD install folder. There should be a "Find Target" button to go right to that location. If you go one directory up from there you end up in the main install folder.
In there you will find a folder for each of the games, and a few more for the TFD launcher, patches and internet files.

Unofficial 1.03 Patch
This patch contains all the fixes listed in this thread, get it here:
http://www.commandandpatch.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=1
or alternatively here:
http://www.cncforums.com/new/local_links.php?action=ratelink&linkid=424&catid=4&lpage=1

Official Patches:
http://www.ea.com/official/cc/firstdecade/us/news.jsp?src=Patch102
Install both patches, do 1.01 first - it's near to the bottom of the page.
or alternatively here:
http://www.cncforums.com/new/local_links.php?catid=4

Nyerguds guide to installing & patching TFD:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cncstuff/installing_tfd.html
(note that this is mostly just the manual way of applying all fixes that are in patch 1.03)

General fixes:

Patch 1.02 does not install:
When you click on the 1.02 patch it does not run; what has happened is that it has been copied to the support folder
of TFD. To install it run the version which has been copied there (C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\support\TFD-102en.exe).

Games won't install:
Check that your DVD-ROM supports dual-layered disc's - to do this, go to
Control Panel > System > Device Manager (Vista)
Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager (XP)
copy the model name of the DVD-ROM into Google (or any other search engine) and look for a site that lists its specifications.

"Autorun.exe is not a valid Win32 Application" errors can be fixed by removing InCd - it seems to cause conflicts with the security part of the DVD-ROM.

Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors can be solved by booting into safe mode and installing the game from there (log on as the administrator account).
You could also copy the entire disc contents to a folder on your HD and see if it'll install from there.
If you are having trouble with other CDs/DVDs then it could be this:
Change the transfer mode to PIO:
http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/olh_adp.php?p_faqid=10703#piomode
If you have 2 DVD-ROMs on the same Data cable that can be the problem, Put one of the DVD-ROMs onto the same data cable as you Hard Drive.
This only applies to IDE (PATA) devices where there is only one hard drive and two DVD-ROMS.

If you get An Error {-5004 : 0x80070002} has occurred or similar error then reinstall the InstallShield software:
Hold the windows key on your keyboard and press the r button > The Run dialogue should appear > Type C:\Program Files\Common Files into the text box and click OK
Right-click the InstallShield folder, and select Rename > Change the name to InstallShieldOld > Start the game installation again to reinstall the InstallShield components with the newest version.

Games won't run in Vista: Vista users should take ownership of the TFD main folder. To do this, right click on the "Command & Conquer The First Decade" folder,
go to Properties -> Security -> Advanced -> Owner -> Edit -> Select your username -> Tick "Replace Owner" box -> Apply.

Vista users should also disable User Account Control:
Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control On Or Off -> Untick "Use User Account Control" -> OK -> Restart
Business & Ultimate users:
Start -> Control Panel -> Classic View -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy -> Local Polices -> Security Options ->
User Account Control: Behaviour of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode -> Change to: Elevate without prompting
User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode. Change to: Disable
-> Restart

"Incorrect CD-ROM" errors - if you have emulation software like Demon Tools or Alcohol 120% then make sure you don't have more than 1 virtual drive.
You could also try removing the software too in "Add/Remove Programs" (XP) or "Programs & Features" (Vista) in control panel.
Note: The TFD Launcher program can be the cause of these errors (especially on Vista) so try making shortcuts to the games instead. The xcc shortcut installer will do this for you:
http://xhp.xwis.net/utilities/XCC_TFD_Shortcut_Installer.exe
If those do not work then try the solutions posted here:
http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/cci/ea/cd_troubleshooting.php

Games crash on dual core machines: If you have a dual core CPU, and games seem to crash for no reason, start the game
and press CTRL ALT DEL (For XP Pro select Task Manager!), right click on the game's .exe process, click "set affinity", and deselect one CPU.
ForceCore is a small program that automates this process:
http://www.kalme.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=44&Itemid=35

Video's hang: On some systems Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 can hang with repeating sound in the first
second of video, this often means it is impossible to get past the Westwood Studios logo. To fix this run Dxdiag and disable Sound acceleration
Start > Run > type dxdiag > OK > Sound > Hardware Sound Acceleration Level - Move slider until on 'No Acceleration'
Picture Guide: http://www.cncworld.org/?page=features/tutorials/tdhang

Specific game fixes:

Command & Conquer 1 (TD/C&C1/C&C95):

C&C95 1.06 patch: A number of patches were made to fix errors in C&C95. This patch is a combination of all of these plus some extra fixes by Nyerguds:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/
For a while now, it had been noticed that C&C95 v1.06b crashes on certain temperate/winter/snow maps when showing certain areas on the radar after saving the game. Nyerguds has released a hotfix for this here:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/cc95v106b_radarcrash_hotfix.rar
Extract the file into your C&C95 folder.

Online play:
Use CnCNet to play online, it fully supports Nyerguds 1.06 patch & allows up to 6 players:
http://www.cnc-comm.com/community/index.php?board=71.0

fast scrolling bug fix in C&C95:
Go to your C&C1 directory, run ccsetup.exe and enable Back Buffer in Video Memory.
If that doesn't work or makes the game stutter, try CPU Grabber instead:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cncstuff/0_files.html#cpugrab

Display problems (e.g.: "Unable to set the video mode"):
Go to your C&C directory, run ccsetup.exe and set the screen resolution to 640x480 (or, with the 1.06 patch, 1024x768 )
Also try changing the refresh rate on your monitor to 60 Hertz:
Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Monitor (XP)
Control Panel > Personalization > Display Settings > Advanced Settings > Monitor (Vista)
If you have scrambled colours running the game on Windows 7 then try the following fix:
Right click on your desktop and click on "Screen Resolution" and leave it open (do not minimise). Run the TFD
launch and start the game, or click on the shortcut for C&C1.

Red Alert 1 (RA1/RA95):

Red Alert's v3.03 patch updates Red Alert to the most recent version:
http://www.cncforums.com/new/local_links.php?action=ratelink&linkid=287&catid=59
The RA 3.03 TFD fix is required to use this on TFD:
http://www.cncforums.com/new/local_links.php?action=ratelink&linkid=45&catid=4
Savegames for RA1 3.03:
http://www.cncforums.com/new/local_links.php?action=ratelink&linkid=263&catid=63
LAN Play patch for RA 3.03:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cncstuff/ra_v303_lanpatch_1_00.zip
*note - if you use 3.03 then there is no need to apply the dll file patch above.

fast scrolling bug fix in RA1:
Go to your RA1 directory, run rasetup.exe and enable Back Buffer in Video Memory.
If that doesn't work or makes the game stutter, try CPU Grabber instead:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cncstuff/0_files.html#cpugrab

"Unable To Read Scenario" error in the Giant Ant missions can be fixed with this patch:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/tools/AntMissions.rar
Alternate version with mission briefing video for the first mission:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/tools/AntBriefing.rar

Display problems (e.g.: "Unable to set the video mode"):
Go to your C&C directory, run rasetup.exe and set the screen resolution to 640x480.
Seems the game needs a UDP port here. All TCP ports gave errors if tried. If you have a Netgear router check the box for "Send Delay".
If you don't have a Netgear router, try it off first then on if you still can't host. Click "Refresh NAT" a couple times.
I have still got to try linux and Wine actually. If you open the sticky (and aptly named) "common problems" thread and look for "video" in the page, you immediately find the solution. You need to disable Sound Acceleration.
Sorry..

Any chance you know of a way to temporally automate this "disable Sound Acceleration" in combination with a ForceCore option
I know how to setup a bat file is there a system command I can use? Thank you

All Right the combo of the "disable Sound Acceleration" in combination with a ForceCore" works well enough,
Only Tiberian Sun still has a small Video Issue...
Hmm... I thought of setting up a batch file that did the necessary registry edits... but not only does it tum out to change a huge amount of reg keys, it's also the kind of keys that I think may be different on each system :-\

There's a ton of related values under keys ending on DirectSound\Device Presence and DirectSound\Mixer Defaults. I dumped my registry in a text file twice, once after enabling sound acceleration and another time after disabling it, and then used a tool to compare the 2 files and got out all related keys (there's usually a lot of unrelated ones concerning the opening of files and such too). Maybe if you do that you can make a batch file which changes the keys accordingly, using the command line reg.exe?

Mind you, it's entirely possible that dxdiag does some sort of device reboot when saving. In that case, changing these keys will still not have the same effect as what dxdiag does.

Either way, you could try it out... here's how to find all of they keys that need editing. On my system, I had to change the same values under 8 different keys.

Start regedt32.exe (from command prompt, or with start -> run)

In "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\", look through all of the ControlSets ("CurrentControlSet", "ControlSet001", "ControlSet002", etc) and see which ones contain a "Hardware Profiles" key.
In each of the folders under "Hardware Profiles" ("Current", "0000", "0001", etc), see which ones can be expanded all the way up to "System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\".

Under those, you'll find the actual device keys, with another subkey in them. In that subkey you'll find the keys "DirectSound" and "DirectSoundCapture".

In the "DirectSound" key, you need the keys "Device Presence" and "Mixer Defaults".

In "Device Presence" these keys will change:
"VxD": 0x00000001 when enabled, 0x00000000 when disabled
"WDM": 0x00000001 when enabled, 0x00000000 when disabled

In "Mixer Defaults":
"Acceleration": 0x00000000 when enabled, 0x0000000F when disabled

Try running "start /?" in the command prompt to see what it gives.

-edit-

Huh... when I don't give the full path, it doesn't start the C&C95.exe in the directory I run it from, but the one configured in the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\C&C95.EXE

Really bizarre, though I guess that won't cause any problems if you don't have the game installed two dozen times like I do.

-edit again-

ForceCore doesn't seem to work well in combination with "start /wait" - apparently the ForceCore program ends right after starting the game, so that doesn't work, since "start /wait" only waits for its own argument program, and not any others it might've started. And ForeCore can't run "start" since it's a system command, and not an actual program.

If the core setting is kept and inherited in a batch file (which I can't test - single core here), I might have found a trick with 2 batch files that should work though:

C&C95.bat:
{
@echo off
ForceCore.exe 1 startcnc.bat
}
Again, you may have to give the full path of startcnc.bat

startcnc.bat:
{
@echo off
:: disable audio acceleration
start /wait "" "C&C95.exe"
:: re-enable audio acceleration
}
Note that "start" sees any first argument between quotes as window title text, hence the empty quotes before the "C&C95.exe"

You should test if it really runs with one core then though, by alt-tabbing out and checking the core affinity in the task manager.

What's that run32.dll though? Normally you can't execute dlls like that; they're libraries... I searched my system, but I don't seem to have a run32.dll.

I tried Executing it manually-clicking C&C95.exe, it didn't appear to to use any more than core "0" anyway.....??

I tried it on another app Ventrilo.exe, the inheritance of single core selection affinity seems to pass in this case as well...

Now to find command line Argument that works for the other problem and with that note I have posted on my favorite PC Forum.
Command & Conquer: The First Decade__UoF-Patch(1.03)+Bat

Thanks.

Again good luck with your exams. If you don't mind what are you studying?
Hardly the place to discuss that but anyway... um, in general, I'm studying to become Bachelor in Applied Informatics.
Specifically, at this moment, I'm studying the most boring thing I've ever had in my courses... Information Systems Management X_x
(I'm a programmer ffs. Do I care what enterprise managers need to do with computer-based automation systems for resource & production management... if I ever work on that kind of systems, THEY still make the decisions anyway.
Guys (Frankaz), the common problems thread needs to be updated. (It only works for Vista Business and Ultimate)
Vista users should also disable User Account Control:
Start -> Control Panel -> Classic View -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy -> Local Polices -> Security Options ->
User Account Control: Behaviour of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode -> Change to: Elevate without prompting
User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode. Change to: Disable
This part needs to be scrapped.

Secpol (or the securities policy module) is only included in Vista Business and Vista Ultimate, rendering 99% of people who would need this advice without a solution. Not that 99% of people don't have Vista Ultimate, it's just that the ones who do can usually fix problems themselves.

Change it to this: (works for all Vista)
Vista users should also disable User Account Control. Although this usually unnecessary, there are instances where this has solved various user's problems.

* Hold the Windows button on your Keyboard and press the "R" key.
* In the box, type the following: msconfig, then click OK.
* Click Allow to grant this program administrative priveliges.
* The MSConfig program should appear. Click on the Tools Tab.
* Scroll to the "Disable User Account Control" script.
* Run it.
* Restart your computer.

UAC should now be disabled, automatically granting administrative priveliges to all programs, such as needed by RA2 and TibSun.
Or similar.

Hello frankaz. I've found something that fixes Red Alert 1 from freezing. It's a hardware fix, so the user needs to be comfortable with the BIOS. To fix Red Alert from freezing with repeating sound on modern Core 2 cpus, disable speedstep (C1 function and on some motherboards the EIST function aswell). The crash occured whenever the CPU changed speeds when red alert was running. This explains why it did not happen every time the game was running, but happened more often when other programs were running in the background.

That fixes a different problem. This error occurs when the system changes the CPU clock speed to cope with demand, it is not the same one which causes the game to hang with hyperthreading/multiple cores.

In answer to your post Phantom, have you applied Nyergud's 1.06 patch?

Zero Hour should now work online.

where do you find Programs and Features are you talking about vista?
That is for Vista, It's called Add/Remove in XP or below...

It's in Control Panel.
