CnC-Welten.de have a Interview with Renegade-X Team!

Have Fun!

AnNo1935: 1.Hello, how did you get the idea of creating such a modification for Renegade?

[NE]Fobby[GEN]: Well originally, a few years ago in 2006, a friend of mine was putting the C&C Renegade beta models in W3D as model replacements for the game. When seeing that, I had the idea of remaking C&C Renegade completely either on the same engine or a different engine. I eventually got together with a few other people with similar ideas and wanted to do the same thing, namely, Titan1x77, sgtmay, and Anthrax, and we decided that we wanted to work on the C&C Renegade remake on a game called Unreal Tournament 2007. So because of that, we named the mod Renegade 2007, and started secretly working on art, and building our team. We publicly announced the mod in 2007. The others I have mentioned however are no longer on the team. Unreal Tournament 2007 was renamed to Unreal Tournament 3, so we decided to rename the mod Renegade X. Considering C&C Renegade was not getting any sequels, the idea of remaking the game on a new engine was popular.

2. How long did the development take? (how long is it going to take?)

We started finding members, writing documents and researching in March 2006. By 2007, we had the necessary amount of team members to start serious work on the mod. However, we were only able to do art for the first 10 months, because UT3 came out in November 2007. When the game finally came out, we were able to do serious work on the mod, like coding and rigging our assets into the game. So, I would say that although the project has been around for three and a half years, if you are to skip the concept and team building stage, we have been working for about 2 and a half years. We have had Unreal Tournament 3 for almost two years.

The first version of Renegade X was the 0.35 Beta, released on September 30th, 2009. Since then, we've had two more releases. I don't know how long it will take for the mod to get fully finished, but it is now at its 0.40 version and a lot of fun.

3. How much did you work on it per day?

It differs between the members, and depends on the day. Some of our core members work a few hours every day, while some others will work a few hours every couple weeks. Our work encompasses modeling, texturing, coding, audio engineering, mapping, animating, writing, speaking, and much more.

4. To what have you attached importance?

The most important thing is the success of the mod.

5. What were the positive and the negative aspects of your job?

The positive aspects: it's fun. We are working with a fantastic team, with a lot of dedicated, hard-working and hilarious people. We are all very good friends and the biggest fans of our own mod. We like overcoming obstacles, and developing the mod into something better. It's also very inspiring to see our mod become successful before our eyes - Renegade X started out as an idea, and now look how far we've gotten. We are very proud.

The negative aspects are the obvious: all worthwhile aspects of life needs work. Since the nature of our work is technical, we often run into problems that need a lot of time for fixing. We've gotten good at that, though.

6. Did you like your jobs? Did it make fun?

We love our jobs. We communicate on our forums, MSN, and Teamspeak everyday. We are constantly making jokes, and yet the mod is very professional; it's definitely the best working environment I've ever seen.

7. Do you think the number of Renegade’s players have increased since your mod?

I'm not sure about C&C Renegade's numbers, I think they're relatively the same. Renegade X's player counts tend to increase every time we make a release. We do wish that more people played the mod, but there are enough to have a good time.

8. What is happening, if somebody has found bugs and is reporting the errors? Do you try to fix them?

Bug reporting and fixing is a very tedious process, and yes, we are trying our best to fix everything that is reported. However, we do have some priorities, so the major bugs are tackled before small ones. Our team is doing a great job of fixing bugs, we have fixed most of the major problems and dozens of smaller bugs since the first release.

9. Are you going to support (patch) the game or are you finished after your current patch?

Well the mod isn't done, so of course we will continue to patch Renegade X. This is our 3rd release so far this year, and we continually plan on making more releases. Each beta will fix more glitches and add more content, such as weapons, maps, features/abilities, server options and much more. Have you read our 0.40 beta release post? We plan on using the UDK to make a standalone version of Renegade X soon as well.

10. Do you have separate sections for works like design and so on?

Yes, and no. Most of our members specialize in certain fields, but some can do multiple things.

11. Please give us some information about your mod, for example about the changes/fixes. Where can it be downloaded etc.

All the information you need about how to download and play the mod, as well as a change-list from the current version, can be found here: Moddb.com

12. What did take the longest time at working on Renegade-X?

Each character takes at least a month to do.

13. Are you going to start some other projects?

We'll see we have no formal plans on future projects, but once we've finished Renegade X and still feel like developing games, we can definitely start working on other projects.

14. Some rumors in the community say that Renegade-X is released as standalone? Is that true?

Epic has released the new Unreal Development Kit (or "UDK"). This is HUGE news. The UDK is essentially a free version of the Unreal Engine 3, available for developers worldwide. The kit includes the most updated version of the award-winning engine, with all of the necessary editors and tools to create standalone games. Everything from the ease of use and flexibility of the engine, all the way up to the visual elements have been greatly enhanced in almost every possibly manner. Since this is all new to us, we can't quite say much yet. But what I can say, is, there is a great chance Renegade X will become a standalone game in the future. Still freeware, obviously, this isn't going commercial due to its C&C themes, but a standalone Renegade X means you will no longer need UT3 to play it.

15. Unfortunately we have almost finished the interview, can you tell the audience about your team, please?

Our team comprises of about 25 people. From which, about 8 are very active and work on the project almost everyday. Our team has included members from the game and movie industries, as well as hardcore C&C fans that have worked on many other mods. It is one of the most highly skilled mod teams around, with the ability to make Renegade X both visually appealing and stable. Our team is very quick, and things get done constantly. It's a great team, and I hope that can reflect onto the mod we're making.
